Value chain innovations in emerging Health Tech, Smart City and Greentech industries addressing the challenges of smart urban environment.

Value chain innovations in emerging Health Tech, Smart City and Greentech industries addressing the challenges of smart urban environment.

Today’s urban systems need to adapt to a growing population in order to sustain and provide a healthy, smart and green environment. Smart technologies, solutions and innovations are needed. The EU-funded URBAN TECH project will support the acceleration of competitive success of European SMEs through market launch of new or significantly improved products and services with higher value in Health Tech, Smart City and Greentech industry sectors. The project will also bring together different stakeholders of the industry value chain to support SMEs in scaling their solutions.

Tittle of the challange: Monitoring and reduction of chlorine in drinking water

Drinking Water Utility needs the solution for monitoring and reducing the use of chlorine preparations in the drinking water supply. The drinking water provided by utility companies often requires the introduction of chlorine preparations in higher concentrations than necessary, which reacts to carcinogenic THMs.

Tittle of solution: XS Lab

We have developed Microbium® MPN Analyser which is automated, easy-to-use device. It brings microbiological laboratory to every DWU. It does that by automating the Most Probable Number (MPN) method, a gold standard in the microbiology of drinking water, used for quantitative determination of microorganisms present in the water, mainly species of E. coli and coliforms. It is a combination of technical device, hardware (sensors), software (with machine vision) and biochemical reagents.

To address this project and fulfil our goals, we plan to design a software that will optimize the levels of chlorine residual in drinking water pipelines at various locations. The software will enable input of chlorine levels from different locations and propose the optimal concentration for further implementation.

Our objectives are:

  • Reduce the chlorine concentration in the DWU system (the challenge owner), without compromising the public health.
  • Optimize the frequency of monitoring.
  • Motivate DWUs around European Union to use Microbium® MPN Analyser to decrease chlorine concentrations in the system.
  • Establish a database of treatment technologies in DWUs.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101005301
